Understanding Feng Shui

When you hear the term 'Feng Shui', you might think of complicated principles and ancient rituals, but let’s change that narrative. Feng Shui is fundamentally about creating balance and harmony in your living space. It's about arranging your environment to enhance positive energy (or ‘chi’) and it's simpler than you might think.

So, what is Feng Shui, exactly?

At its core, Feng Shui (pronounced “fung shway”) - "Wind and Water" - is an ancient Chinese practice that’s all about arranging your environment to invite good energy, or “chi,” into your life. Think of it as the art of creating a space that feels balanced, supportive, and kinda like a warm hug from your home.

The good news? You don’t have to be an expert (or redecorate your whole house) to start using Feng Shui. Let’s break it down and see how you can incorporate Feng Shui into your home easily.

The Power of Visuals

The visuals in your home play a crucial role in Feng Shui. A cluttered room can create chaos in your energy flow, making you feel stressed and overwhelmed. Start by decluttering each space—donate anything you don’t love or use. This not only makes the space look better but also enhances the energy within it. Energy needs to flow, and clutter blocks that flow like a traffic jam at rush hour. When your home is organized and visually appealing, it promotes calmness and positivity, allowing you to feel more connected with yourself and with others who visit. Start with one drawer, one corner, or one shelf. A little clear space can make a big energetic shift.

Every little thing we can do, using just a bit of common sense, in order to make our home more appealing to the eyes will improve the chi in that area. For example:

Avoid water leaking: water leaking is considered waste of resources and attracts the energy of financial lack. Any faucet dripping needs to be fixed right away. Keep the sink dry, empty and clean.

The top of the kitchen stove must be clean and shining to improve the energy of the fire element. Vital for cooking/feeding the family. The kitchen is the heart of the house, it's a place of nourishment and in, many cultures, it's where the family gets together. A clean stove means it's ready to be used and receive good fortune, abundance.

Garbage doesn't need to look like garbage. It doesn't need to be seen either, but wouldn't be pleasant if it's organized inside the trash can? I know...it sounds absurd. Who has the time, right? But it doesn't take much to rinse off a can before discarding it. Or any plastic used to wrap meet. Extra points, if you are able to separate the recyclables. It's not that hard when you do it right away as a form of habit. Paper can be nicely folded instead of crushed into a ball, that will also save space in the trash can. Any nasty garbage can be tide up inside another bag or box to not be seen or smelled when you open the trash. I mean, think of how many times in a day you throw something away? That's how many times you open that lid and "interact" with what doesn't serve you anymore. Think about it for a moment...Oy...

Ok, enough of garbage talk, I was just trying to show that the secret is on the little things we don't pay attention to.

We feed our energy from what we eat, touch, hear and see. All of that can change or influence on how we feel. And how we feel will determine how we interact with others, how we work, how we go through the day...How we manifest our dreams into reality.

So, yeah, the place where we spend most of our time or the place where we recharge requires some love. I'm sorry to say, but just cleaning it once a week or biweekly won't do it. But, simple daily habits can do miracles.

But...Don't trust me blindly. Do it! Try and come back to tell me.

Simple Feng Shui Tips for Your Home

Now that we understand the basics, let’s apply some simple Feng Shui tips you can easily incorporate into your living space:

Welcome Energy at the Front Door: In Feng Shui, your front door is known as the “mouth of chi.” It’s where energy enters your space. So keep it clean, well-lit, and easy to open. Maybe add a cute doormat or a plant to make it feel more inviting. My house faces East, wood element, so I decided to paint my front door green. You don't need to go that far, but if you are deciding which color should be your front door, I recommend to seek guidance on the 5 elements. It's a topic for another post, but here you can have a preview:

Balance the Elements: Feng Shui is all about balancing the five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. You can bring these into your space through colors, shapes, and decor. For example:

  • Wood: plants or green/brown colors

  • Fire: candles or red/orange tones

  • Earth: ceramics, crystals, or yellows

  • Metal: metal decor or white/gray

  • Water: mirrors or blue/black colors

No need to go overboard—just try to have a little of each element in the rooms where you spend the most time.

Love Your Bedroom Vibe: Your bedroom is your recharge station, so make it feel cozy, calm, and aligned with love. Avoid storing stuff under the bed, use soft lighting, and keep electronics to a minimum if you can. Bonus Feng Shui points for putting your bed where you can see the door (but not be directly in line with it). Keep the bathroom door and toilet always shut. Remember what we talked about garbage? Don't make me start it again.

If you share your bedroom with a spouse, add some fire element to keep the passion alive by using warm colors on your decor. Not too much, cause couples also need to sleep to keep a healthier relationship, right?

I custom made a painting of my wedding using warm colors for my bedroom. It always warms my heart when I see it. It reminds me why I married this guy...it can be very helpful, sometimes...Believe me! Send me a message if you feel called to have one for yourself. ;)

Let Nature In: Open a window. Good lighting can significantly impact your mood. Make use of natural light as much as possible, and install soft, warm lamps in dim areas for a cozy feel. Bring in a plant. Let the light shine through. Nature is one of the best ways to freshen the energy in your home and connect you to a sense of peace. If you don't have a green thumb, search for easy to care plants, such as succulents or peace lilies, and place them in areas that need a little life/creativity. Please, pay attention which ones are safe to be nearby your pets. Or even buy good fake ones, why not? I won't tell anybody. Nature is a symbol of harmony, expansion and abundance. Use it with no moderation at all! Of course, I should add to my store some paintings with more greens, I used to love painting trees (thinking to myself).

Extra tips:

  • Use Mirrors Wisely: Mirrors are powerful Feng Shui tools. Position them in a way that reflects natural light but avoid placing them directly facing the front door, which can push energy away.

  • Colors Matter: Different colors evoke different feelings. Incorporate calming colors like blue and green for tranquility or energizing shades like yellow and orange for warmth and happiness.

  • Balance Furniture: Ensure your furniture layout fosters conversation. Limit the sharp edges by choosing rounded furniture which promotes flowing energy.

Final Thoughts:

By implementing these simple changes, you can demystify Feng Shui in such a way that it becomes a natural part of your living space. Feng Shui doesn’t have to be complicated. Start small. Pay attention to how your space makes you feel. Trust that even little changes can bring big shifts—more flow, more peace, and yes, more good vibes.
